| Algar Waterfalls |
The Algar is a kind of natural water park with
authentic swimming pools in which to enjoy the crystal clear waters: the
'Baladre', the 'Presa', to name two of them, filled by springs whose waters
flow directly from among the rocks. Paths follow the course of the river
closely and are constantly flanked by the incomparable and characteristic
vegetation of the area, such as reeds, bamboo, oleandas and so on.
One path takes you up through aromatic herbs to the
'Arboretum' a garden of natural spices, in which the most typical of
Mediterranean spice plants are to be found. Next to this is the museum of
the environment which houses a small collection of aromatic and medicinal
herbs and the essence of oils and perfumes made from them. All these
products are available for purchase. |
At the top part of the valley above the bathing
area, a wide open space has been prepared with all types of facilities such
as barbecues, tables, benches, stored logs, toilets and showers.
A water museum is also planned which will have on
display the various types of irrigation systems and appliances used for
water distribution in the Valencian Community. ext to all of this is a large free car park.
There are also several other attractions that have
set up near the Algar Waterfalls like the Railway Museum and the Algar
Cactus co.

| Excursions to the Algar Waterfalls are available
from most tour operators and booking agencies throughout Benidorm. |
Restaurants and
Nightlife
The restaurants
(Prices are for three courses, without wine)
£20 Top-notch food at very reasonable prices is provided by the
chef-proprietor, Stephen Anderson, whose CV includes a spell at Alastair
Little's Soho restaurant. Brilliant, extensive Eurasian menu with wines to
match, but the taster menu is the one to go for: strawberry gazpacho, foie
gras-filled artichokes, hot noodle salads, coconut sorbets...
Seu-Xerea, Calle Conde de Almodovar, 4 0034 963 924000
£9 Valencians head here when they want home cooking, which means dozens of
different rice dishes, in addition to fresh fish. If you want a genuine
paella, allow plenty of time or call first: it takes an hour to cook.
La Riua, Calle Del Mar, 27
0034 963 919183.
£6 Six tables, a menu restricted to pizza, local entradas and creme caramel
and a faade that hardly shouts "Come in!". Even so, this has atmosphere in
spades, and what comes off the pizza shovel is as good as Napoli's finest.
Pizzeria Endavant, Calle Los Venerables, 3. |
Whats on, When?
The Fallas, one of Spain's wildest festivals, runs from March 12-19, with tons of fireworks accompanying the burning of huge papier mache effigies every night. Big night Out
Don't start before 11pm. Valencia is revered as a party town by the rest of
Spain, which is saying something. Bars are open until 2am or later, but late
night life centres on the Carmen district, north-west of the cathedral.
Calle Caballeros has dozens of tascas (tapas bars) and coffee shops. It is
also home to the best bars and nightclubs - many of which compete for the
most stylish and outlandish toilets. Try Foxtrot Congo and Johnny Maracas
for dancing and agua de Valencia (Champagne, orange juice and vodka), Carmen
for being seriously cool, Negrito and Ghecko for a more laid-back feel. No
entry charges, but prices are higher than in the back streets - £3.30 for a
whopping Bloody Mary, £1.70 for a bottled beer, £1.60 for a glass of Rioja. |
